The medical field is one of the hottest employment fields to enter today. There are literally hundreds of positions available for someone looking to enter into a medical assistant career in almost any field of medicine.
Although there are no specific national licensing requirements to become a medical assistant, college education courses in anatomy, physiology and medical terminology are recommended. There are also office protocols that are taught to medical assistant students including insurance processing, record keeping, medical ethics and patient relations. Most employers looking to hire a medical assistant require some type of formal medical education, but do not necessarily require a degree in any specific discipline. Even without the need for a degree, many medical assistant courses are two year programs in a certified college that lead to a degree or certification.
Medical assistant positions are hot jobs, even in today’s economic conditions. As part of the education process to become a medical assistant, many colleges offer an internship period at a hospital or doctor’s office. Some of the highest demand positions require a medical assistant who is educated in both back office, or patient care, and front office, or general medical forms processing and record keeping. Higher paying positions as a medical assistant can be found in doctor’s offices or private clinics. Medical assistant positions can also be a springboard for other medical positions, such as medical network systems analyst positions or nursing careers.
Physician’s assistants are on a different level than medical assistants. They are licensed to practice medicine, with the supervision of a licensed doctor. Physician’s assistants are essentially doctors without the full medical doctor training. They are a slight level below a doctor and generally provide the same functions as a doctor, although their decisions are reviewed and approved by a supervising physician. Medical assistants are not able to practice medicine as a physician’s assistant, medical assistants are in place to offer administrative and minimal clinical support.
The medical assistant field, in recent years, has become one of the fastest growing employment sectors in the United States. With thorough training, medical assistants are essential to the efficient function of most hospitals and private practices. Doctors rely on medical assistants for clerical and clinical support when treating patients and keeping efficient and accurate records for their offices.
