Resume Heading Examples
Resume headings are the first words a hiring manager sees when glancing at employment resumes. If your resume heading format is inconsistent with the resume heading formats seen in competitors’ resumes, or if you fail to list the most relevant information first, you risk the hiring manager being unable to find what he or she is looking for. Follow theresume heading examples in these sample resumes, and you will increase your chances of landing the interviews, the second employment interviews, employment interview follow up, and eventually, the job you want.
All resumes should begin with your name and contact information (with no heading) and an Objective section. The remainder of the resume should be include Employment History, Educational Background, Special Skills, and other headings as applicable, formatted to highlight the most relevant information, so it can “sell” your qualifications to the hiring manager. The resume should close with “References Available Upon Request.”
1. Highlight Employment History: In this example, the candidate received most of his skills and knowledge via twenty years of on-the-job training. Therefore, Employment History should be listed first.
Employment History
ABC Contractors, Las Vegas, Nevada (1989-2009)
- Fully certified in operation of forklifts, front-end loaders, bulldozers, aerial and scissor lifts, and cranes.
- Achieved recognition for demonstrated attention to safety and submitting safety suggestions.
- Responsible for training new hires on all heavy equipment.
2. Highlight Educational Background: In this example, the candidate is a recent college graduate with very little work experience. Educational Background is listed first.
Bachelor of Chemical Engineering, MIT (2009)
- Graduated with Honors and a GPA of 3.9.
- Major coursework included thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, kinetics, physical and organic chemistry, calculus, differential equations, design, and process control.
3. Highlight Special Skills: In this example, the job requires specific special skills, so they should be listed first.
Special Skills
- Bilingual: Native Spanish and English speaker
Some other heading samples include Certifications, Professional Affiliations, and Extracurricular activities. You might think of others relevant to you. Just remember that your resume is your sales pitch and format it accordingly. Happy job hunting.
